October 2012 - IPSec VPN Upgrades No Longer Provided by Cisco

University Information Technology Services (UITS) has offered VPN (virtual private network) services from Cisco software in two ways:

as downloadable software on the Sitelicense site that can be installed on your computer
via the website vpn.arizona.edu from which you can install VPN

Cisco will no longer provide upgrades on the IPSec VPN software that you may have downloaded on your computer from Site License. Cisco will, however, continue to provide security patches for existing versions until July 2013, meaning that you may continue to use your downloaded VPN software until it no longer works.

What Does This Mean to You

This means that, if you have downloaded UA VPN software onto your computer…

• if you upgrade your operating system, the VPN software may become incompatible with your system.

• if the VPN software on your computer stops functioning you will have to use the VPN available from vpn.arizona.edu

Cisco is continuing support and development for the AnyConnect SSL web client. If you have a VPN version that no longer works, you can go to http://vpn.arizona.edu to install the AnyConnect VPN client.

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides a secure connection from your computer to the network you are connecting to. The VPN client is the piece of software that handles the connection between your home computer, laptop, or mobile device and the UA network.

Available To

Faculty, staff, and students with a valid UA NetID.

Costs

This is a free service.

How to Setup AnyConnect VPN

VPN Information and Download Access for Faculty/Staff and Students

You will need to have up-to-date Java on your computer.

This client is currently incompatible with 64 bit versions or Linux and should not be used. We will provide documentation once the compatibility issues are resolved. Check back here often for update.

Disconnecting the VPN Client

To disconnect, right-click the yellow padlock and choose Disconnect.

Network Managers: MPLS Group Setup Information

MPLS VPN Group Setup Information

As the campus moves towards full implementation of MPLS, individual VPN groups with small sets of IP addresses will be phased out. Unfortunately, departmental VPN groups were created in the past as a form of authorization to various networks and resources on those networks. This practice does not scale to a campus our size. Authorization to resouces is the responsibility of the resource owner and needs to be done at or near the resource.

UITS Secops will be creating VPN groups for each of the MPLS VRFs (buckets). The intent of this will be working in conjunction with the CATNET administrators to provide VPN groups that are automatically populated with NetIDs of the folks associated with each of the MPLS VRFs. These groups will be augmented with Netmgr's groups where DCCs and others with temporary NetIDs may be added. The automatically populated and Netmgr's groups will be combined so that every elligible NetID can be authenticated to use the MPLS VRF VPN group.
